Can I add another person to my AT&T account?

It is possible that you desire to add another line to the existing AT&T Internet wireless account for many reasons, such as providing your spouse, child, or any other member of your family with rights to manage the account, or because you require another sub-account with an additional line, or simply because you wish to grant an authorized user the right to make changes to the account. With AT&T, it is very simple to request for inclusion of more individuals on your account. Here is what you should know.

Who Can Be Added to Your Account?

AT&T allows account holders to add two categories of new users.

1. Authorized Users

An authorized user is an individual you allow to make modifications to your AT&T account but is not legally liable for the purchases. For instance, your spouse may be added as an authorized user so that he or she can process account-related activities such as adding new lines or requesting an upgrade on phones. However, you as the owner of the account will still be held responsible for paying the AT&T bill.

2. Additional Responsible Parties

It also permits you to provide another financially responsible person to your account. This enables you to split the responsibility of charges incurred by AT&T between you and your spouse, domestic partner, or another person. If you include another responsible party, then both of you will be held legally responsible for all the expenses made within the account.

Primary responsibility for the account remains with the account owner (the original subscriber) unless the ownership of the account is transferred to another person. More on that below.

As a credit cardholder, there is always the option to add an authorized user.

Authorizing a user to your AT&T wireless account is simple and can be done through the website or an inbound call.

To add an authorized user online.

1. Go to AT&T Wireless and sign in with your account to take you to the Account Overview page.

2. In the “Account settings” tab, click on Manage Additional Users.

3. Go to Add authorized user and provide the necessary details such as the name, address, email, and phone number.

4. Set proper rights – for instance, enabling the user to modify the rate plan or add new lines.

5. Click Send invitation.

The new user will receive a notification that they need to agree to terms to access the account. As the account’s owner, you also have full control over this and can always remove the user or deny his/her permission.

To add an authorized user by phone.

Dial 800.331.0500 to be connected to a customer service agent. You may be asked for identification details to prove that the account belongs to you. Then input the necessary contact details of the person to be admitted as an authorized user.

Adding a responsible party

You'll need to check eligibility requirements before adding another responsible party who shares financial responsibility for service charges.

  • Both people have to be 18 years old or above
  • Both parties have to undergo a credit check.
  • Your current account must be valid and should not have any outstanding balances.

If approved, here are the steps to add a responsible party.

1. Log into your AT&T account using the primary account holder and go to the Profile section.

2. Click Add Account Manager.

3. Please provide details of that person for registration: full name, address, date of birth, and the last four digits of the SSN.

4. Review the Terms & Conditions regarding the financially responsible party.

5. Click Submit request.

The second responsible party will then receive an email or mailed letter with information that he or she should accept responsibility for the account. Once both agree to the conditions, both partners can add, modify, and control the data of the AT&T account entirely.

Transferring Ownership of the Account

You also remain the owner of the account and have the option of transferring the account ownership to another person in a way that you relinquish all responsibilities regarding the account. It also permanently assigns the primary owner and bill payer for the future to them.

You may wish to assign AT&T ownership in legal matters such as separation or divorce or if introducing the wife/husband to eventually take over controlling the wireless plan.

To begin with the ownership transfer one needs to log in to the AT&T online account and navigate to the Profile page. Select the Transfer of Service in the Additional Options and fill in the details of the new account owner.

However, after the current owner starts the process, the new owner must formally confirm the transfer within 30 days to finalize the process. However, at that point, they will assume billing and account management responsibilities every month for the future.

Other Extra Lines and Sub Accounts

If you only wish to have a second wireless line and another phone number under your current AT&T account for a relative or a virtual line, then you can easily configure another phone or device. More often than not we do not need to include the individual as an account manager or as the responsible party.

You have two options when getting extra lines on your plan.

1. Set up a device as the second phone under the Single Bill.

2. Open a single account that has lines of authority and subaccounts. This enables you to have customized billing passwords and payment options for up to 10 lines in a single account.

For additional secondary devices or family account sub-billing options, visit the online account or call AT&T customer service. They can make the differences clear and assist in determining which approach is most suitable when it comes to additional lines.

In other words, consumers can easily enroll the new authorized users and the responsible parties to AT&T’s current wireless account. This enables the spouse, partner, children, or administrative assistant to view information, track service alterations, request new lines/devices, or help with the payment of the bill. If you have any other questions about adding other individuals to personal or family plans, you can contact AT&T support.
