Is AT&T getting rid of AT&T TV?

AT&T TV stands as a streaming TV service provided by AT&T as a cable TV and satellite TV alternative. It transmits live TV signals as well as on-demand programs and services to customers via the Internet as opposed to cable or satellite. The service began in 2019 and in December 2022 there were a couple of articles and rumors alleging that AT&T may terminate or phase out the AT&T TV service.

As it stands, AT&T has not come out to say that it intends to dispose of AT&T Internet TV, however, there are signals and some conjecture that would strongly suggest this is very much the case.

Why People Thought AT&T May Discontinue AT&T TV

  • It has been a fun while, however, recent tweets and tech blog articles have indicated that AT&T TV has been discontinued and will stop functioning soon.
  • Current AT&T TV clients said that they have received letters informing them that upon the expiration of their current deals, they can transfer to DirecTV.
  • DirecTV is still one of the major TV platforms AT&T owns since they invested a lot in buying the company.
  • Recently companies like AT&T got a bit carried away and sold some of its assets such as WarnerMedia to address some of its core service areas like wireless. It may not be wise for them to offer both AT&T TV and DirecTV as these two service offerings are similar for them.
  • About AT&T TV packages, availability, and programming, notable changes and shifts have occurred, and quite significantly over the past year, which may be suggestive of disengagement or at the very least, a lack of focus on the service.
  • Pay TV subscriber base shrinks and AT&T has been among the worst affected in recent years due to rising streaming competition. Another view of the decision to shut down AT&T TV could be due to strategic planning in the video services they offer.

ALSO THIS

  • - Directv is a satellite internet service so it can get rid of Directv or it can get rid of streaming or both. DirecTV Now is a streaming service so it can get rid of DirecTV Now or streaming or both. The streaming part is capable of being merged, but the live TV part may not.

Is AT&T TV Still Effective for Now?

This blog post is up to date as of December 2022 and AT&T has not made any public statements of their plans regarding the possible elimination of AT&T TV or warning its users of the cessation of its services. The AT&T TV streaming app or the web interface is still available, and the service remains fully operational today with no indication that it will be shut down shortly.

Customers still can order and activate even the AT&T TV service itself if it is offered in the given area. Hence there may be some truth to the rumor of the product being discontinued shortly but it may not be the full picture. However, the service and offerings could still change over time, meaning that the firm could still come up with new strategies to counter efforts to outcompete it.

Despite these changes, it remains uncertain whether AT&T TV is going to be part of AT&T’s video plan in the long run or whether the company is gradually going to phase it out in favor of DirecTV and deals with streaming services. However, AT&T has not officially stated that it will cease to exist or mentioned any particular timeframe for the shutdown of AT&T TV.

Recap

There have been lots of speculations going around on the social media platform about AT&T phasing out, or deleting their AT&T TV streaming TV service. But to this date, AT&T has not released any information that the service is over or a customer’s contract being suddenly canceled. AT&T TV remains viable for current and, to an extent, even new users today. Whether AT&T will gradually decline this streaming video service is still unknown, but the outcome does not seem to be very positive. The direct implication is that for now there is no assurance that the plug will be pulled right away. Any action to discontinue the AT&T TV business should notify existing customers first of the plan.
