A brief history of MTV

MTV (Music Television) was established on August 1, 1981 and the only program being aired was music videos throughout the night. It was the first channel solely concentrated on popular music, which affected the formation of pop culture and the music industry. MTV was established by John Lack and executive Robert Pittman in the period of Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment. Initially, MTV aired rock and pop music video clips with the use of presenters known as VJs or video jockeys. But by the late 1980s, MTV started playing rhythm and blues, hip hop and hard rock in order to capture the Black American market. However, in the years that followed MTV branched out from its core music roots and began to feature reality, comedy and drama shows. MTV has been criticized for the absence of music videos, but with this new invention, the channel revolutionized music and culture by placing music videos and artistry on a pedestal. Currently, MTV spans through more than 700 million households, undoubtedly influencing pop culture.
